Failure to embrace reforms, disclose personal assets, and provide access to government information led many to believe the administration of previous president Khama was corrupt. However, with the appointment of President Mokgweetsi Masisi in 2018, a sense of optimism returned.

Botswana’s transformation toward a mature economy has been slow, in part owing to sluggish economic diversification and the continued dependence on diamonds. This economic vulnerability has been particularly evident during the 2008 and 2009 global recession.

Botswana’s future transformation will largely depend on Masisi’s qualities in fighting HIV/AIDS, boosting the economy’s diversification and tackling social problems.
