The delicate relation between the elected parliament and the government has grown more difficult, with a vocal opposition back in parliament since the last election in 2016. While 15 women ran for parliament in the latest election in 2016, only one woman, Safaa al-Hashem, won a seat.

The latest national development plan “New Kuwait 2035” launched in 2017 highlights foreign direct investment (FDI), which the governments aims to triple by 2035. It also aims to transform Kuwait into a regional commercial hub through economic diversification to reduce the state’s dependency on oil.

The political developments in Kuwait have been overshadowed by mounting tensions in the Gulf. Kuwait has long held a mediating role in the Gulf, which it has demonstrated again during the current Qatar crisis.
