Liberia experienced a peaceful transfer of power in January 2024 after free and fair elections, with Joseph Boakai narrowly defeating incumbent George Weah. Political participation, press freedom and civil liberties remain comparatively strong.
The country faces difficult living conditions, with deep urban–rural and gender inequalities, poor infrastructure and weak education access. After years of economic decline, the new government prioritized macroeconomic stabilization, restoring donor confidence, reducing inflation and rebuilding foreign exchange reserves. Arrears to international lenders are being addressed.
The Boakai administration launched the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development, focusing on infrastructure, education, agriculture and the rule of law. It also established the War and Economic Crimes Court to address the country’s violent past. Political wrangling over positions has delayed implementation, highlighting persistent governance weaknesses.
