In 2022, North Macedonia began EU accession talks, but a lingering dispute with Bulgaria hinders further progress. Local election outcomes prompted the resignation of Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, alongside key ministers and party figures. Dimitar Kovachevski took the helm as prime minister and maintained the government coalition.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had a severe economic impact on North Macedonia, causing very high inflation. While the government faced criticism for its limited and ineffective anti-inflation measures, they secured political support by raising the minimum wage, freezing essential food prices, and fostering regional trade collaborations.
Primary challenges for North Macedonia remain the establishment of the rule of law and the fight against corruption. To address these issues, very decisive and tangible steps are needed, including the allocation of additional human and financial resources, as well as a demonstration of the governing parties to tackle corruption within their own ranks.
