In the 2019 presidential elections, which were unanimously considered free and fair, President Macky Sall won a second five-year term. He now is at the apex of his power, governing with a strong mandate and a large parliamentary majority. The president has used the opportunity to consolidate his power.

With high growth rates, a gradual increase in foreign direct investment and the conclusion of some key policy projects, Sall has been widely praised as a successful leader. However, some of his policies have failed to provide results or have been criticized for excluding large segments of the population.

Senegal has also been praised for its swift, transparent and effective management of the COVID-19 pandemic. Testing and treatment facilities, as well as emergency aid and protective measures, were quickly established throughout the country.
