Sierra Leone’s quest for democratic consolidation and economic development has been obstructed by systemic dysfunctionality, as well as the impact of international crises. While inter-party cooperation is practically non-existent, political violence escalates and deteriorating living conditions lead to violent social protests.
In early 2023, the most pressing issue was food security due to the disruption of global supply chains, a high inflation rate and the rising costs for imports. Additionally, unemployment and poverty steadily rose. Nevertheless, the government aimed to pursue further reforms as outlined in the national development agenda.
The population faces a tremendously challenging socioeconomic environment characterized by corruption, lack of accountability, disrespect for the rule of law as well as human rights, and inefficiency on all administrative levels. Progress has been made, however, on important legislations related to land reform and women’s rights.
